A Reading from Matthew's Gospel

...Jesus told his disciples to get into their boat and cross to the other side of the lake while he stayed to get the people started home.

Then afterwards he went up into the hills to pray. Night fell, and out on the lake the disciples were in trouble. For the wind had risen and they were fighting heavy seas.

About four o'clock in the morning Jesus came to them, walking on the water! They screamed in terror, for they thought he was a ghost.

But Jesus immediately spoke to them, reassuring them. "Don't be afraid!" he said.

Then Peter said to him: "Sir, if it is really you, tell me to come over to you, walking on the water."

"All right" the Lord said, "come along!"

So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he looked around at the high waves, he was terrified and began to sink.

"Save me Lord!" he shouted.

Instantly Jesus reached out his hand and rescued him.

"O man of little faith" the Lord said, "Why did you doubt me?"

And when they had climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped.

That concludes the excerpt from the Gospel.

Thus if your "getting out of the boat" to meet Jesus - i.e. been converted - expect the wind to make a squall - i.e. some difficulty in your daily life but that it just a bit of wind. Not pleasant but keep thinking of the Resurrection of Christ - the ultimate moment of victory - and you will triumph over any squalls of wind in your life.

Yes don't forget that victory has been won by Jesus and that this wind will stop!! Also...
  1. Keep a close eye on your temper in these days as losing it "gives the devil a foothold" (Paul). These things will happen in day to day life; you can either work yourself up or work yourself down.
  2. Be patient! And "If anyone needs patience let him think of the suffering Jesus went through for us" - Paul. With patience you will overcome the squalls of wind - patience is rather like a weapon.
  3. Think positively - remember it was Jesus who said "it is the thought life that pollutes".
  4. Read the bible! The bible is in fact the Word of God and it is good to read it regularly. In fact God uses the Bible to straighten us out. Even five minutes a day and you won't regret it, it's that strong!
